The Vienna Boys Choir Ball

was held on 29 March 2019 under the auspices of the Austrian Ministry of the Exterior (BMEIA) at Palais Coburg in Vienna.
Dear Guests,

The Vienna Boys Choir looks back on over 500 years of history. Such a long tradition means we have an obligation to the future, to connect the old and the new. We are an international choir, with roots in Vienna. One of our strengths is the very Viennese music by the Strauss family, written for the extravagant court balls. These balls were held to celebrate together, to have a grand night out with excellent music, and they were designed to raise monies for charity.

Each year, together with the Austrian Ministry for Europe, Integration, and the Exterior (BMEIA) and their concert hall, MuTh, the Vienna Boys Choir focusses on a different guest nation; in 2019 on Japan, to mark the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between herself and Austria.

On 29 March 2019, the Vienna Boys Choir Ball took place for the first time in Vienna’s fabled Palais Coburg Residenz. The magnificent building was erected on the remnants of the medieval Braunbastei (Braun Bastion), as residence of August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife Clementine d’Orl√©ans. After a turbulent history, the palace was finally restored to its former glory; in 2003, it was turned into a luxury hotel with two gourmet restaurants.

The Grand Opening took place in the Palais Coburg State Rooms, with the Vienna Boys Choir singing, the traditional opening procession and formal opening dance of the honorary members of the ball committee, and the Choir’s Senior High School graduates.

Be enticed by the sounds of the Vienna Festensemble, be delighted by Japanese dancers, and enjoy an exclusive Japanese “AHS Vocaloid” concert, and the customary Midnight quadrille in the Palais Coburg’s foyer. Over the course of the night, you will experience different aspects of Japanese culture and cuisine; meet and mingle with distinguished guests.

Would you like to brush up on (or indeed hone) your waltzing skills? Keep your dance card free - we offer an intense “Waltz Crash Course” guaranteed to make you fleet-footed enough to sweep your partners off their feet.
To get you in the mood, you can choose between a set three-course gourmet menu with wine or a Champagne Reception. And should you want to waltz in true style in your very own suite, the Palais Coburg offers ball patrons special deals on its luxury suites.

This event is organised jointly by MuTh and Palais Coburg Residenz, and made possible with the help of generous donations and sponsors. All proceeds go to the Vienna Boys Choir Scholarship Fund.
